Hollywood Writers' Room

Bootcamp

Introducing the talented inaugural class:

April Agnes, Ed Robinson, Jeffrey Morgon, Lisa Kors, Sarah Hopkins, Schyler Martin, Shanice Williamson, Stacey Russel, Suzanne Egan, and Theodore Rosenblum.

COURSE

This intense, five-week, once-a-week workshop will pull back the curtain to show what it’s really like to write in a TV writers’ room. In this program, you'll get hands-on experience similar to what a staffed writer would on their first job.

The Bootcamp is taught and showrun by GLENISE MULLINS, writer, creator, and Co-EP. Glenise’s credits include The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power (Amazon Studios), The Continental: From the World of John Wick (Peacock), Star Trek: Discovery (Paramount +), Surface (Apple), Warrior (MAX), Outer Range (Amazon), and Invasion (Apple).

CLASS STRUCTURE

The Hollywood Writers’ Room Bootcamp is designed to simulate the real-world structure of a professional, hour-long drama writers’ room in easily digestible, bite-size segments.

We will be using a mystery/thriller short story to adapt into a limited series. Class participants will receive a copy of the IP and the adapted pilot written by the showrunner. Writers will be expected to read both before the first class session. The pilot and each additional episode will be 10 pages long.

All material developed and written in the class will be strictly used for non-commercial, educational use.

WEEK-TO- WEEK SCHEDULE BREAKDOWN

Classes will be from 11am - 2pm PDT with built-in breaks.

August 20th

  • Our first day will start with a Q&A covering the ins and outs of a writers’ room and what’s expected of its writers. This will include a discussion on traditional room hierarchy, pitching etiquette, and most importantly, how not to get fired from your very first room.

  • We’ll then move into the BLUE SKY process. “Blue Sky” means everyone will pitch out ideas to shape the full season story.

August 27th

  • At the start of the class, writers will be paired up and episodes will be assigned. (Since the majority of staff writers have to co-write their first credited script, this will give you the training to work creatively with another writer on an episode.)

  • As a room, we’ll break the overall storylines for the season’s individual episodes.

  • At the end of class, everyone will be sent off to write 2 to 3 page OUTLINES for their episodes.

  • Outlines are due at 12pm pdt on Saturday, September 2nd.

September 3rd

  • As a room, we will discuss notes and adjustments on the outlines turned in.

  • We will re-break storylines if necessary.

  • At the end of class, everyone is sent off to write their 10 page SCRIPTS.

  • Scripts are due at 12pm pdt on Saturday, September 9th.

September 10th

  • As a room, we will discuss notes and needed adjustments on scripts turned in.

  • Off to REWRITES.

  • Rewrites are due at 12pm pdt on September, 16th.

September 17th

  • We will discuss the finished scripts and what’s next on the production side when you become a writer/producer. And a final Q&A covering not only breaking into the industry but also how to have a long and successful career.

SUBMISSIONS

  1. The submission deadline is August 7th @ midnight PDT. SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED

  2. A writers’ room runs as a cohesive team – so don’t apply unless you are willing to commit to the full five-week course. All sessions will be held over ZOOM.

  3. Since this class is designed to parallel the experience of a professional writers’ room – so will the submission process. Applicants are required to send a writing sample for consideration. The sample should be no more than 10 PAGES long. It can be the first 10 pages of a pilot, feature, or a short.

  4. Only ONE submission per applicant will be accepted. (Writer teams are welcome, however, each member will count as an individual student.)

  5. Your submission is complete when both an application and writing sample are received. *You will receive a confirmation of receipt.

  6. From the submissions received, 10 writers will be chosen to participate in the class.

COST

  • The Hollywood Writers’ Room Bootcamp is free to apply and open to all.

  • The full five-week course is $180 per student. Only $36 per session. The program fee will only be collected once you are accepted into the class.
